'Dynamic’, a team of students from St. John Payne School, Chelmsford, Essex, represented their country at the F1 in Schools World Finals supported by LG held in Singapore recently to coincide with the Singtel Singapore F1 Grand Prix. The team were delighted to win the Best Verbal Presentation award which was sponsored by Williams F1 team.

After the awards ceremony, the team were hosted by British High Commissioner Paul Madden at his residence. Dynamic were also given a tour of the Williams F1 garage by Chief Executive Adam Parr at the Singapore Grand Prix, with an exclusive chance to view the inner sanctum of the team trackside.

The Dynamic team won a place in the F1 in Schools World Finals after taking victory in the UK National Finals of the challenge held earlier this year at Autosport International Show in Birmingham. Emily Latham (15), Anna MacBride (16), Michael Smith (15), Edward Talboys (15) and Tim Tillet (16) had the experience of a lifetime when they competed in this international event held at Ngee Ann Polytechnic and the Conrad Centennial Hotel in Singapore.

Emily Latham, Team Manager, Dynamic, said of F1 in Schools, “This international competition is amazing. Meeting teams from so many different countries and cultures is a very special experience.”

Of the challenge Emily adds, “We’ve worked so hard to get to Singapore, to compete here, we’re just so pleased to be here. It’s been exciting, nerve wracking and really good fun. It’s so hot as well! And it was really interesting to go to the High Commissioner’s house, we were treated like VIPs, so it was an awesome day. We really didn’t think we had won any awards as the standard was so high, so it was great to go home with one, and winning an award meant we had the chance to go in the F1 paddock which was amazing.”

The event started with a welcome breakfast, gift exchange lunch and a flight on the Singapore version of the London Eye, the Singapore Flyer, for all the teams. With 25 teams from 18 countries, Dynamic enjoyed the unique opportunity to meet peers from around the world and build friendships which will endure for many years. Gingerbread cookies, Irish leprechauns, specially minted Royal Mint coins, and a donation to a school affected by the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake were among the gifts exchanged. 

Dynamic’s week of activities continued with an invitation to meet the British High Commissioner at his Singapore residence and the team were only too happy to make this visit. They proudly gave the High Commissioner their verbal presentation which had won them their award. Their final highlight of the week was an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the world of F1, with a visit to the paddock at the Singapore Grand Prix and a tour of the Williams F1 garage hosted by Adam Parr, Chief Executive, Williams F1 and a meeting with driver Nico Hulkenberg who signed items for the Dynamic team members.

F1 in Schools challenges students to design, build, test, analyse, and race a scale model Formula One car of the future, using CAD/CAM technology. Each team of between three and six students, brings together their work to present to a judging panel with a verbal and written presentation to support their model car, which is raced on a specially designed 20 metre track. At the World Finals each team brought along a pit display, their cars and portfolio, as well as having prepared a presentation for the judges. Over three intense days of competition, Dynamic competed against the best F1 in Schools teams from around the world. A prestigious awards ceremony attended by many F1 personalities was the final event of the week and Dynamic were delighted to take home the award for the best verbal presentation.
