Fast their car was, indeed, well, fast enough for a team of Malaysian students from Sekolah Dato’ Abdul Razak to take the gong in the knockout racing challenge in last month’s F1 in Schools World Finals in Singapore, which was held ahead of the Singapore GP.The group of 17 year old students, Haziq Asyraf Marzuki, Mohamed Hussein Haro, Danel Iman Che Khalib and Wan Faiq Amsyar Wan, participating as a team called Raluca F1, emerged as winners in the knockout racing element in the finals. In the final, racing against Zer0.9, a collaboration team of Australian and UAE students, Raluca F1 blitzed the Australian/UAE team with a winning time of 1.251 secs to take the honours. Victory for the Malaysians got them a special prize, with F1 in Schools presenting the team with a simulator race seat as a reward for their efforts. A total of 25 teams from around the world took part in the finals, with 17 awards in different areas up for grabs. An American team, Unitus Racing, was crowned champions when it won the overall F1 in Schools World Finals. The education programme is aimed at raising awareness of Formula One among students and school children globally through the means of multi-disciplinary challenges associated with the sport. Open to students aged from 9 to 19, its main objective is to help change perceptions of engineering, science and technology by creating a fun and exciting learning environment for young people to develop an informed view about careers in engineering, mathematics, science, Formula One, science, marketing and technology. The competition inspires students to use IT to learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacturing, branding, graphics, sponsorship, marketing, leadership, teamwork, media skills and financial strategy, and apply them in a practical, imaginative and exciting way. Obviously, it worked very well for the Raluca F1 boys. |
