Von: F1 in Schools
Local area schools will be racing head-to-head in the North East area regional finals of the F1 in Schools Formula One Technology Challenge, to be held at Newcastle University Business School on Tuesday 1st February 2011.
The competition challenges teams of students to use CAD/CAM software to design, test and manufacture miniature compressed air-powered balsa wood race cars. For the younger secondary level students (9 – 13 years) the competition is to design, construct and race the fastest race car on the planet, a challenge which is linked to the World Land Speed Record car attempt with Bloodhound SSC, a project currently in development. For older students (14-19 years), the goal is to design, manufacture and race a Formula 1 car of the future.
A purpose-built 20 metre track will be used to test the speed of the model cars. In addition, participants will be judged on their final car design, engineering development, team work and project presentation. The winners from each category will compete against teams from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales for the UK F1 in Schools title to be held at Big Bang Science Fair at Excel, London from 9th – 12th March. The winning team from the UK will then go on to represent the country at the F1 in Schools World Finals which will be held later this year.
