Life in the very fast lane

06 Oktober 2010 Von: Pine Rivers Press

THE four Nitro Monkeys from Pine Rivers State High School are among the top 15 from nine million international students who took part in the junior F1 in Schools program.

Nitro Monkeys’ team of four year 9 students Greg Mills, Alysha Limmer, Josh McClennan and Megan Gaskell, who all won a Quest YoungStar award last year competed alongside five United Arab Emirates students in the World Titles at last week’s Singapore F1 Grand Prix.
Teams raced a miniature Formula One-style balsa wood car, powered by a carbon dioxide canister over a 20m course.
The team known as Zer0.9 nine members trying to break the one second barrier ran second to the US overall (Germany third) and won the Best Collaborative (cross-nation) team.
None of the five other collaborative teams finished in the top 10 out of 25 teams.
Pine Rivers State High School teacher Corey Gieskens said the competition was an arduous process but was extremely fulfilling for everyone involved.
The Zer0.9 team ran a time of 1.081, faster than the United States team of six who took the title across 11 judging criteria.
``The teachers and students involved have worked incredibly hard. It’s over and above normal school work but what we got out of it was extremely rewarding,’’ Mr Gieskens said. ``The whole thing was really exciting. There was a lot of patriotism going on with the teams, which was great fun. We actually bumped into Mark Webber the other night, which was pretty exciting.’‘
The Nitro Monkeys team was due back in Pine Rivers early yesterday morning.
