The team’s 2010 win took them to the World Finals held last year in Singapore, where they won the award for the best verbal presentation and were fourth overall. 

 

Dynamic, a team of 16-year-olds: Emily Latham, Edward Talboys, Michael Smith, Anna MacBride and Timothy Tillett, put a supreme effort into retaining their F1 in Schools National Champions title, with Team Manager Emily saying, “I think we were more nervous in these finals than we were last year, or even at the World Finals. As we tasted how much fun it was to compete in the World Finals and knew how close we had been to winning, we were all very determined to have another crack at being World Champions and to do that we had to win the National title again.

 

“We only had two hours sleep last night as we spent all evening doing the final preparations for our verbal presentation which was our final opportunity to convince the judges that we were the best team competing this year. Although we are all very tired it was definitely worth it and we’re still in a bit of a state of shock that we did actually win again.”

 

Dynamic won the Formula 1 Class of the F1 in Schools 2011 as well as the Best Research & Development Award sponsored by Ferrari North Europe, with the judges rewarding the efforts they put into this element of the challenge and in particular for their new bearing wheel assembly. For this they worked with a local manufacturer to develop it into a product, recognising the importance of building strong relationships with specialist suppliers to achieve a goal.

 

Andrew Denford, Chairman and Founder of F1 in Schools said of this year’s entrants, “Every year we see more innovative, more professional, more sophisticated presentations at the National Finals and once again the teams have raised the bar. My congratulations go to Dynamic for taking the title for a second time; they put tremendous effort into their entry, taking heed of the judges’ comments at last year’s National and World Finals events and it is a testament to their determination to succeed that they achieved their victory.

 

“We’ve seen the cream of young engineering talent at this year’s finals and I’m sure that many of them will consider a career in industry, which makes me very proud. We are already seeing F1 in Schools ‘graduates’ taking roles in the automotive and Formula One sectors, as well as using the initiative to stand out from the crowd in their efforts to win university places and, ultimately, positions within industry.”

 

Eleven other student teams took home trophies at the Awards ceremony, with Blur from Robert Mays School, Odiham, Hampshire topping the list at three trophies with first place in the Bloodhound Car Class, Fastest Bloodhound Car and Best Team Sponsorship and Marketing. Their success brought the team an invitation to form a collaboration team with a winning team from another country to compete at the World Finals in Malaysia. Dart Racing from PETROC, Barnstable took first place in the Rookie Class, while Dynamico from Sir John Leman High School, Beccles, Suffolk,  took second place in the Rookie Class and the Best Engineered Car award. Third placed Rookie Class team was Fenominal Iron from Emmanuel College, Gateshead.

 

Fflam, a team from Ysgol Botwnnog, Pwlheli, took second place in the Formula 1 Class.  The team were also the highest placed welsh team and this success is rewarded with an invitation to compete and represent Wales at the World Finals in Malaysia later this year. The welsh team were also nominated for Best Team Sponsorship and Marketing and Best Team Identity Awards. Third place in the Formula 1 Class was awarded to Fusion, from Dame Alice Owens School, Potters Bar.

 

Fast Lane from Ysgol Friars, Bangor, were runners up in the Bloodhound Car Class and were one of the three nominations for the Innovative Thinking Award. Enigma from St. Dunstans School, Glastonbury took third place in the Bloodhound Car Class. Hughes’ Honeyz from Winterton Comprehensive School, Scunthorpe recorded the fastest time in the time trials of the Formula 1 car class winning the Fastest F1 Car Award. The team was also nominated in the Innovative Thinking Award and Best Team Identity Award categories.

 

Team Vitesse from Devonport High School for Boys, Plymouth, won the Innovative Thinking Award for producing a process flow chart for showing the rest of the school how to use the machinery used in F1 in Schools. Carbon FibreZ from St Bedes Catholic Comprehensive School took the Best Team Identity Award and the students from Aeroflux from Aberdeen Grammar School, Aberdeen were presented with the Perseverance in the face of adversity Award, for making it to the National Finals despite very little help and many setbacks.

 

F1 in Schools aims to help change perceptions of engineering, science and technology by creating a fun and exciting learning environment for young people to develop an informed view about careers in Mathematics, Engineering, Science and Technology. Students are given a brief to design a model compressed powered F1 Car of the future using CAD/CAM. Cars are then manufactured on a CNC machine. Each team of between three and six students, brings together their work to present to a judging panel with a verbal and written presentation to support their model car, which is raced on a specially designed test track. At the National Finals each team brought along a pit display, their cars and portfolio, as well as having prepared a presentation for the judges.

 

The cars race on a 20 metre track, with the F1 Class cars covering the distance in just over one second, a speed barrier which is yet to be broken by any student team since it was set by Team FUGA from Northern Ireland at the 2007 World Championships.Younger students design, build and race a Bloodhound car, linking with the upcoming British attempt on the World Land speed record, with the Bloodhound SSC project. The current record is held by Speeding Snails from Wilmington Grammar School, with a time of 0.620 seconds.
